January 2020 | Concert for passing-by trains

Martijn was asked to lead a special project which is part of the Beethoven 2020 celebrations in Germany. On March 8th 2020, along the train route from Weimar to Jena, the landscape will transform into the "biggest orchestra pit" of the world. Twelve different ensembles will perform "Ode an die Freude" along 2 kilometers of track, for which Martijn will write the arrangement. More info coming soon via this link (in German).


December 2019 | Debut at Concertgebouw Amsterdam

On December 27th, Martijn will make his conducting debut in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. He is stepping in for conductor Jonathon Heyward and will lead Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen in a program with Schuberts "Unfinished" symphony and Chopins first piano concerto. Severin von Eckardstein will play the solo part.

November 2019 | Aftermovie Composers Lab 2019

In August 2019, Martijn conducted the Belgian ensemble I SOLISTI during a composer masterclass. Eight young composers worked under guidance of coaches Georges de Decker and Frederik Neyrinck on their scores to the film "O KUKU" by Sam Billen. At the end of the week, there was a public performance which was documented in this small documentary. The next edition is planned in August 2020.

October 2019 | World premiere in Brussels

Since the beginning of October, Martijn has been rehearsing in the Théâtre de la Balsamine in Schaarbeek (Brussels), where he will be conducting the world premiere of Baudouin de Jaers new chamber opera "Ce que vit en nous". The performances will take place from November 5th until November 9th. In 2014, he already cooperated with librettist and scene director Stephane Arcas and Baudouin de Jaer for the creation of "La forêt - Vert presque vert". This time, Martijn is joined by Sarah Théry (mezzo-soprano), Xavier de Lignerolles (tenor), Tomas Van Caeckenberghe (baritone) en Nicolas Luçon (actor), as well as ensemble besides.

September 2019 | Louis Spohr conducting competition

At the 25th international Louis Spohr conducting competition in Kassel, Martijn won the first prize as well as the audience prize. In the final round on Saturday, September 7th 2019, Martijn conducted the Staatsorchester Kassel with music by Brahms and Spohr and managed to convince the jury, which consisted of Franceso Angelico and Georg Fritzsch, amongst others by his expressive conducting and vivid interpretation of the Macbeth overture by Louis Spohr. 


June 2019 | Martijn wins Franz Liszt Preis

The "Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar" decided to award Martijn the Franz Liszt Preis for the year 2019. The €2000-prize is awarded yearly to a student of the HfM Weimar which excels in artistic and academic performances, as well as for his commitment to the inner-school councils.
